  • 1 cup warm milk
  • ½ cup honey
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • 3 eggs (divided)
  • 5 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp ground cardamom
  • 2 sticks softened butter (for Honey Orange Butter)
  • 3 tbsp honey (for Honey Orange Butter)
  • zest of 1 orange (for Honey Orange Butter)

Instructions

  1. Combine warm water, a pinch of sugar, and yeast in a mixing bowl; let sit until frothy (about 5 minutes).
  2. In another bowl, whisk warm milk, honey, melted butter, and two eggs; then mix in the yeast mixture.
  3. In a large bowl, combine flour, cardamom, and salt; gradually stir in wet ingredients until a dough forms.
  4. Knead on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth. Place in a greased bowl and let rise for about an hour or until doubled.
  5. Punch down the risen dough, divide it into two portions, shape into loaves, and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  6. Cover and allow to rise again for about 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  7. Bake for 25–30 minutes until golden brown. Cool on wire racks.
  8. Mix softened butter with honey and orange zest to make the honey orange butter spread.
